Kulae Puttu, Steamed Cakes With Jackfruit And Rice Rava ( Idli Rava )

Kulae Puttu, this is another Coorg recipe that I had tried out, after my trip to Coorg. The dish is made with jackfruit pulp and rice rava/ rice semolina, of course I made it a couple of months back, when jackfruit was still in season, somehow didn't get to post it till now. This is a healthy dessert, mildly sweet from the natural sweetness from the jackfruit and the jaggery added, but do try it, only if you like jackfruit. Since jackfruit is not in season now, you can try this with bananas too, serve it with a little ghee on top, very flavorful and delicious..

Need To Have

  • Jackfruit Pulp - 2 cups
  • Idli Rava/ Rice Semolina - 1 cup
  • Powdered Jaggery - 1 cup
  • Grated Coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Salt - a pinch
  • Banana Leaves for making the Kulae Puttu

Method

Take the banana leaves and tear it into small rectangles, as shown.

Slightly warm it on a hot tava/pan, to make the leaves flexible and easy to fold ( without breaking ), remove and keep.

Soak the idli rava/rice semolina in 1 cup water for 1 hour. Then, to the soaked rava, add the jackfruit pulp, jaggery, coconut, salt and mix it well ( batter should be thick enough to spoon it on the leaves ).

Take a leaf, place a spoon of the jackfruit mixture, fold the leaves as shown in the picture.

Arrange them on a plate and steam them for about 30 minutes. Cool it a little, then open the leaves and serve it with some ghee on the top.

Note
Jackfruit pulp can be replaced with banana pulp.
Can add some cardamom powder, instead of adding grated coconut, can added chopped coconut pieces, gives a nice crunchy taste.
Also, can add 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, it'll make the cakes less denser.
